The Gift of Struggle: Why Failure Shapes Us

Struggle Is the Forge

If you’re alive, you’re going to struggle. At the bench, in your business, in your family, in your health—struggle is not optional. It’s woven into the human experience.

But here’s the difference: not all struggle is created equal.

  • Wasted struggle is when we plow through the pain without reflecting, only to end up in the same ditch.

  • Worthy struggle is when we pause, extract the lesson, and come out sharper, wiser, and more resilient.

This episode of The Jeweler’s View explores how to turn your hardest seasons into fuel for growth.

Lessons From My Son

This summer, I’ve watched my youngest son channel his struggles into something powerful: starting a T-shirt business called Empath Clothing.

The designs are raw and impactful—each one carries meaning. And yet, almost daily, something goes wrong. Ink doesn’t transfer, a design fades in the wash, or the dog ruins a shirt. His first instinct is frustration. But when he breathes, steps back, and looks again, he often sees new textures, new styles, new possibilities.

That’s what struggle does when we give it space—it transforms.

Lessons From the Studio

I’ve been there, too.

  • Running my metalsmithing school during enrollment dips, panicking about payroll. That season forced me to innovate, to create new programs that became some of our most impactful.

  • Burning out by saying yes to everything, until exhaustion and illness stopped me in my tracks. Those breakdowns taught me to protect my time and energy.

Struggle is painful. But it’s also the birthplace of innovation and clarity.

Don’t Waste Your Struggle

One of the most powerful ways to ensure your struggle isn’t wasted is to process it—talk about it, write it down, share it with other makers. When we name our struggles, they lose their sting and become lessons instead of shame.

That’s why community and mentorship matter so much. They give us space to reflect, learn, and grow rather than staying stuck.

Your Reflection Prompt

This week, I want you to pause and ask yourself:

👉 What area of my life or work feels like a struggle right now?👉 Instead of asking “Why me?”

can I ask “What is this here to teach me?”

When you frame struggle this way, it becomes a forge—not a failure.

Power Phrase of the Week

“Struggle is the forge where strength and innovation are born.”
